5.3 Pathology

The scattered pattern of risk factors, indicators and onset characteristics easily provokes the idea that there is no ‘real’ disease involved. It is therefore important to stress that in case of PVD there is clear histologic pathology. There is an impressive increase of mast cells and nerve vessels (x10) in the vestibulum. The symmetric specific localization of the infections suggests that clusters of cells are involved, which may refer to a certain ‘gate keeper’ functionality. This pattern resembles the situation of a chronic infection of the tonsils. Whether this pattern is the cause or the consequence of the local situation however remains the question.
