Dysfunction occurs when the mechanism is not performing as it was designed to perform in the context in which it was designed to function.’
Examples of are:
- the mechanism fails to perform when a certain adaptive problem arises (e.g. absence of fear when being seriously threated).
- the mechanism is activated under the wrong circumstances (e.g. feeling sexually attracted to a close relative).
- the mechanism fails to display the desired reaction in relation to another mechanism. The dysfunctions mentioned include fears, moods (such as depression), addictions, habits and eating disorders.
